Lateral Filing Cabinets for Storage

The two main types of files, lateral and vertical, vary in both depth and size.

Lateral files are almost always wider than vertical files. For those that are setting up a home office they will need to consider the amount and the type of space they have available for file storage. Vertical files tend to be very popular in the home office because they take up a minimum amount of space.

Medical offices tend to mainly use lateral files. The files in lateral file cabinets are often stored from left to right, instead of from front to back. Lateral files can be purchased as either compartments or as a single filing unit. Those who think that their storage needs will increase over time will probably want to consider a filing system that can be added to over time.

Keeping it Together

There are usually hanging folders in lateral files that can accommodate both letter and legal sized documents. Some also feature a place in which to store spiral binders. The key is to create a filing system you will follow consistently, no matter what type of cabinet you decide to purchase. To ensure that your system stays organized you will need to train anyone who uses it. If, for example, you hire a temporary employee for a brief time, you will need to start by giving them an overview of how your files are organized. This step will save you lots of time in the end as you won’t need to spend additional time searching for misplaced items.

All types of business have used file cabinets for years as a way to organize their important documents. You will find that file cabinets offer you a wonderful organizational tool to help you reduce clutter and keep track of those things that are essential to your business. File cabinets also give your documents increased security, whether at home or at the office.
